Ember's tongue lolled out excitedly as she saw her opportunity. Polaris's white plume waving in front of her was too much a temptation to pass up. Crouching down, Ember began to stalk the tail as if it were some unknowing prey. Panting, the amber-furred pup stared at the tail for a moment as if hypnotized. Then, with a little leap upwards, she grabbed it by the end and pulled.
As soon as she'd yanked Polaris off balance, Ember bounded away as if avoiding retaliation. Run, Kesh! Ember called as she made her escape behind a nearby tree.

Kesh leapt to the side, but decided not to run. Instead, he rolled onto his back, his underbelly exposed as he wriggled and rolled in the dirt, his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. He made groaning noises that were obviously sounds of joy and excitement.
Finally happy with the amount of playing he'd done, Kesh rolled to his side and panted, his head moving only enough to see where everyone was. His tongue was still out, touching the dirt now.

Polaris squeaked and took one final bite at Ember's auds before trotting over to the large hunks of reindeer meat that were near Larka. Knowing she would not refuse her, Polaris crawled over submissively anyway, the barrel of her chest grazing the dirt gently as she tore into the rich red meat with sharp puppy teeth.
It was quite possibly the best thing that she had ever tasted. With her belly round and full, an enormous yawn escaped her as she padded over to lay against Larka's chest, whimpering little contented noises as she curled against the soft white fur of her Alpha.
Larka smiled complacently as she gently groomed Polaris, who was in dire need of it. Gazing over at the other two pups she spoke gently.
The meat is yours to eat, do not be shy. I am quite full, I assure you.
The pups were a welcome distraction, one that she sorely needed. They were helping dull the physical pain in her limbs and the spiritual aching of her tender heart.

Kesh rolled back over on to his stomach, taking the alpha up on her invitation. He walked slowly over to the meat and bent over to sniff it. The pleasant aroma of the fresh meat made his stomach tighten from the pangs of hunger, and he bent down and took a large chunk of it in his mouth. The juices coursed down his throat and quenched his long-time hunger. He let out a sound that, had he been a cat, would have sounded like a purr.
He swallowed the meat and proceeded to eat some more.

Her own belly already full, and now feeling tired from the romp, Ember sat on her haunches and let out a big yawn. As her new playmates ate, she padded back over towards Larka to curl up against her side again. She turned once then lowered herself to the soft ground, her head between her paws.
The female pup had already been tired from her journey so the exuberant frolicking had drained her thoroughly. Exhausted, but happy and content, Ember fell asleep as soon as her eyes closed. Once in a while, a dream would cause her to yip. Otherwise, she slept the deeply and soundly.

Kesh finished filling his belly and let out a yawn, his tongue curling out of his mouth before he closed it and shook his head. He looked around to locate the other two pups - the two were curled around the alpha, already taken by Sleep.
Kesh glanced around the area and eyed a tree just across from the alpha. He took one last look at the alpha and padded his way over to the tree. He pawed at the dirt near the roots, making a little indentation in the ground, then circled, curling up in the dirt between two large roots. He curled one arm under his body and stretched out the other, resting his head on it. When he was certain he was comfortable, he closed his eyes and let Sleep have his way.

Larka stayed diligently awake, for it was just herself and the pups left in the clearing. She knew that they were at an advantage, because few animals messed with wolves, and the seclusion of the dense forest helped hide them. Even so, injured as she was, Larka would put her life on the line for the three slumbering pups without hesitation. So she watched over them like a snowy pelted guardian angel, her brilliant golden orbs never straying far from Kesh, as the dark colored pup had chosen to lay some distance away. Her voice was whisper soft as she spoke, and only the trees seemed to hear her.
Never fear, little ones. I shall keep you safe, and even though others have abandonded me, I shall never do the same to you. If only I knew where Nuri and Faris were...Did Nuri find Nasir and banish Thatcher forever from this land? What of my sons Thaddeus and Maelskar? Are they even still alive?
The trees merely whispered incoherently at her, and she wished very truly that she were not alone. she was always alone. Mates came and went, seemingly vanishing off the island for all eternity.
A soft, mournful howl echoed through the trees as she tried to shed her greif, its message plain and heartwrenching.
Am I destined to walk this world alone?
