Winter's deepest breath was coming… and some were already full into the swing of the season. The song of the alpha's son carried into the lands, telling of joy and happiness. A smile appeared on the dark wolf's muzzle, but he didn't raise his voice to respond. The moment belonged to Basile and Keeya alone; the rest of the clan were simply ghosts in the mist as far as the happy couple was concerned. So he crouched alone in the shadow of a ravine, quietly staring off into the distance. Snow was falling here on the mountain tops. The ravines and lower foothills, however, were dry as as bone. Rain had not fallen during the spring or summer of the previous year, and the earth had suffered for the lack of it. The strange lack of moisture had sent Thaddeus exploring to determine how widespread the phenomenon was. He'd even ventured close to the edge of the Ravilin Forest. There, too, the ground was crisp and brittle. Cold was coming, and the forest wolves would suffer alongside the prey they hunted if the water levels fell much more. The ebony wolf shuddered as a particularly cold blast of wind separated his fur like a knife through clothe. He curled his forepaws under his chest, cat-like, and wrapped his tail around his hindquarters. The brute lowered his head, pressed his ears back, and closed his eyes. Perhaps his closest friends were out running like maniacs in the swirling snow, but he had infinitely more sense.
