Had Surulian lost himself… within himself again? Things had churned so quickly, much too quickly… spiraling around him until everything had been scattered to the four winds and he was left half dazed, half in wonderment. He knew the alphess had found love in the large white male who had come calling at the borders only to be invited inward by the alphess herself. The raven male still held reservations about the newcomer, but he did not seem ill intented. It had been obvious in the young Larka’s eyes that she had found fancy with him, and Surulian held no dispute with that. Perhaps that soulless look that shadowed her eyes, much the same as his own, would vanish and happiness would bring about a new chapter for these forest wolves. He could scent the two’s scents as it drifted upon the breeze, likely finding a nest for the pups he was sure would arrive come spring. Winter was an awkward season for them all, and some felt the pull of those inner voices more strongly than others. Surulian felt the pull, just as he always had, but had learned to ignore it as if a small child who whined endlessly. He himself, though the alpha of a large pack for many years, had never had pups himself, and perhaps he never will. To many ghosts and broken promises haunted him to find true love again, he was nearly sure of it.
The others… the young dedicated Lorkan, the beautiful Cloud, and another who mirrored himself had gone…. Chasing after possibilities than none could connect certainties to. He knew he should have followed, provided the support he could, but something had held him back in the mists of swirling snow. Leaving him alone in the comfort of solitude as they raced into the distance. Perhaps his strings' ends were too frayed; perhaps he could never really fit in here, for he did not feel a part of the whole, but a listless spirit lingering upon the outskirts. Was this his doom? Was this the curse had had brought upon himself? Perhaps… and perhaps those faces that haunted him laugh in his wake still, casting mocking eyes upon his back. Completely famished with merely ill thoughts he found an awkward jagged rock to heap himself upon. Keeping watch over the forest though it was not his own, until a purpose found him again.

Cloud had gotten away from Lorkan, Lysander, and Faris as they wandered through the forest in search of quarry. She hadn't intentionally left them, but rather she had allowed her mind to wander into the curious corridors of memory and time and found herself, upon coming back, completely off track. She didn't worry, though, for perhaps the father and sons needed that precious time to bond before the rest of the clan interfered. She doubted things would be as peaceful - and rocky they seemed to be still - when Faris came to find Larka with Atka's cubs.
So the pretty white fem continued along an old path, well worn by previous clan members. She happened upon Surulian's scent, then, and turning found herself not far from where his position was. He was lying upon a rocky outcrop, and she was intrigued at his stillness. She saw in him sorrows from another life, carried over into the clan that they had both joined. Her eyes were sad for him, but not because of pity. She didn't sympathize with him either, but empathy was something the she-wolf possessed in full quantity and quality. Cloud saw things that others missed, small things that alerted her to other's emotions.
Her body seemed to dance across the space between herself and the black wolf, her opposite. She suspected that where she saw the glory in the rainbows, he saw the rain in the clouds. Her bright blue eyes sparkled with life as she came upon him, pausing far enough away not to intrude upon his personal space. Greetings, pack-brother Surulian. She didn't ask any questions or offer any comments. She merely wanted his company, for Cloud preferred a friend to solitude.

Lorkan too had been swamped in thought, worrying over how he would tell father that mother had given up and had found another to stand by her side. He didn't blame either of them, it just seemed to be the way things worked in the Ravilin Forest. Catching Cloud's scent he steadily loped towards her, when he caught Surulian's scent as well. His heart swelled with joy, for he adored being in the company of the two wolves. They were his favorite pack mates to run with. Coming up behind Cloud he nipped her plume gently, teasingly, before peeking over her shoulder at Surulian. A warm rumble of greeting emanated from his chest.
We are united together again, it seems the fates want to keep us close.
His plume waved gently back and forth, wondering silently if perhaps they would be up for more exploring.

Sleep had overtaken his being, and he had welcomed it with open arms. For in sleep he found a solace he could never find in reality. In his dreams he ran with a weightless heart and a soul with wings unbound by regret. In his dreams he felt the warm summer sun upon his back and the warmer still, gaze of the silver wolf who had first stolen his heart, Silver Mist. The softness of her voice, the caring, mothering nature she exhumed. And then the image swirled, contorting into a far different landscape of snowy pines where at his side, the elusive Torn, hardened and distant as she had always been, ran breathlessly in time with his own, the pack not far from their heels. They had never needed words, the two of them. They had found a strange peace in the silence, with merely the other’s company to sooth them. These were the lightened lampshades in his darkness, the hope still remaining in his soul. Ahh but you would think he still longed for those two creatures, still pining for their two very different loves. But this was not the case. Surulian had come to terms with the loss of those loves long ago. He did not yearn for their affections though he missed each dearly. Perhaps it was merely this. They had brought about both great happiness, and infinite sadness. And in doing so, reminded him that he still lives, still breathes, still belongs to this earth. Sometimes he wished it would release him at long last, for its vile claws had been sunk within his flesh for far too long already. But it would not release its grasp, and still each day he woke to the realization that his breaths were still his own, and that the sun had indeed risen once more.
It was not sound nor scent that brought him stumbling from his unconscious state. Perhaps it was merely a knowing, that alerted him to the soft gaze of the gentle, cheerful creature known as Cloud. He could feel the pallid female when she was near, for she changed the atmosphere wherever she went. As his head rose to regard her, his eyes danced with a genuine happiness at her presence. She soothed without speaking and brought light to most all shadows if only for a time.
“Cloud…. It is good to see you have returned, what of your quest and the others?”
He was sure only turmoil could develop from the return of the former alpha, and wondered of the state the pack would find itself again. It seemed there was never truly a calm, peaceful time in this forest. No sooner had his words leapt from his lips that the younger male, one of the pack princes one might say, appeared before them. He exhumed energy wherever he went, and a youthfulness that was almost innocent. He too had become like kin to the raven brute, and it was indeed good to see he had returned in good health and spirits.
“Greetings Lorkan, what of your father?”

Cloud felt Lorkan nip her tail, and she spun to meet him. She thrust her nose into his neck fur playfully, growling gently all the while. For a moment she was tempted to continue, to playbow, but then she heard Surulian's words, and she turned back to the dark hued wolf. Her eyes were bright still, but they suddenly became edged with worry.
Faris was indeed found, and brave Rhys and Lorkan helped to pull him free of his trap. She lowered her muzzle. I lost them as we were wandering though, and I don't know where Faris and Lysander got to. Rhys left before we even set out. She blinked, hoping it was not because of her company that they had departed. Rather, she hoped it was her own inability to pay attention to the trail that separated her from the others.
The fem glanced back around to Lorkan, though, already smiling again. At least he has followed me, and is not, too, lost from us.

Lorkan cast his gentle golden orbs to the ground in shame.
How could I have lost them again? We had just gotten back together...the wind shifted so much...that blizzard wiped out all trace of them. why couldn't I have been a better tracker?
An almost pitiful whimper escaped his muzzle and he couldn't bring his gaze up to meet the two wolves that he admired most besides his mother.
Mother...I failed her again...
His shoulders slumped dejectedly as he sat upon the cold ground, his plume wrapped around his paws as if drawing comfort from it in the same way that a small child does with a treasured toy or blanket.
I thought I had become a better wolf...How do I still manage to let everyone down?
Gentle Lorkan sighed heavily, feeling as if the weight of the world were his and his aone to bear upon his young shoulders.

Cloud watched Lorkan as he explained to Surulian what had happened. His entire demeanor changed, and she felt his feeling of failure coming off of him in waves. The pretty white wolf softened her features, sympathizing, and stepped closer to the younger wolf. It is not for you to be worried, Lorkan. Faris was alpha before, was he not? He knows this land. If he wants to return, he will, and I doubt much could stop a powerful brute like that.
She thrust her muzzle under his own and snapped her head upward, pushing his nose up into the air. Cheer, Lorkan. We are here for you. Her bright blue eyes turned to Surulian, smiling still, and then she stood and pranced the rest of the way to his side. She touched his nose with her own, too, and issued a soft rumble. Are we not?

Lorkan waved his plume half heartedly, but Cloud's warmth soon brought that charming smile back onto his handsome muzzle. Pushing his face into her thick fur, he returned the playful growling. Barking at Surulian he did the same to him, enticing the other male to get up, to be happy, to live life as a wolf should.
His auds pricked and his crania snapped to attention as he heard the authority in his mother's howl.
A clan meeting. We should go.
His face sobered a bit as he moved a few yards in the direction of his mother, hoping that his companions would follow him.
(just posty in the clan thread i suppose)

Cloud's ears pricked when Larka's call sounded, and she glanced up from Surulian to gaze off into the forest. Her tassel swished behind her before falling into some form of rank, about the same as the dark wolf beside her. Her attention turned to Lorkan when he spoke, and she nodded before he finished. Yes, she may have news of pups. Her brilliant blue eyes sparkled when she said this, for Cloud dearly loved cubs.
The white fem danced away from them then, laughing, I'll bet I can beat you this time! She didn't wait for an answer, for she already knew how fast they were. Her paws instead passed over the ground along the trails leading toward the alpha's call, light and playful in the dark forest around her.
