How many times had these aged pine laid witness to the chase of two lovers’s, to the chase of creations. Their hefty boughs groaned under the weight of freshly fallen snows, but they swayed in rhythm to the breeze that echoed symphonies across the landscape. Was this not life at its best? Was this not the meaning for what life is derived? In their eyes dwelled the lustful cry of nature’s song. But it was in their hearts, and in their souls that they called recklessly unto the skies, pronouncing their love. It was new love, young love, oh but a true love, and their binds would remain unbroken, sustaining the tests of time under the watchful gaze of the distant mountains and the endless starry skies.
Atka was amazed at Larka’s sudden limberness, and though he hoped it would not prove to impair her later, he savored the moment, caught in their playful tug-o-war dance that left the atmosphere alight with intensity. And when she spoke he found words caught within his throat, though his gaze smiled with a vibrancy that could rival the sun. She was gone though, before words could be found to challenge her question, and it took only a half a second for his robust physique to rocket after her. Limbs worked savagely at the swells of layered snow and ice, some strides giving way slightly beneath him, but others seemed firm, projecting him rapidly after her. His breath came in quick gulps that devoured the icy air, and his muzzle hung slightly agape as he anxious voice called after her.
“My body would lie to waste in the desert suns, my voice would fall faint against the raging of storms, but my soul… my soul is what seeks you, and your heart will be its prize!”

The fates were kind to Larka as she ran, the soft fluffy snow cushioned her stride while the adrenaline of the chase gave her the strength to continue. A glorious howl flowing with love, hope, and happiness rang throughout the land, wrapping around the trees in a sinuous dance of pleasure as the most recent Alpha of the Ravilin finally-at long last-felt true happiness. Our souls are dancing...dancing amongst the stars that we cannot yet see...We are of one mind, Atka truly this is what it means to be a wolf...As she said this she started to weave in and out amongst the trees, their pawprints weaving a beautiful tapistry of love and life within the snow. She was weaving so that she did not have to maintain such a driving pace. She wanted desperately to keep up the chase, for with every fleeting breath she took it felt more real to her, she was starting to believe that she could experience true happiness over more than just a few seconds... Run away with me...stay with me...shelter me from the sorrows of this life...protect me in the warmth of your loving embrace...

The monochrome court of timbre moved by them in a great unending blur, the scents of the perennial pine and the sharp icy bite of snow washed down Atka’s senses like a whirlwind. But none of the elements could withstand his intent this night, for he felt neither ice nor flame, wind or hail, the world had dropped away from him now and all that his vision encompassed was her. She moved ahead of him in a flash of swirling white, as if a frosted Fae haunting the forest. And as she danced to an unheard melody between the massive trunks of ancient trees, he pursued, bending and weaving his body like a jackrabbit. The ground was uneven in some places, giving way to a broken stride and the residual overtaking of lost time. At one point it would seem that the ground had fallen away beneath him, for the snow gave way unexpectedly a good foot or so. But hardly a beat was missed as his massive body jolted upright, nearly bouncing from within the depression in the snow as if a fawn in chase of its mother. The wind licked at his thick tussled fur which even now bore minute debris acquired by their escapade. Talisman of pine needle and earthen clay held on for dear life but soon was shaken off by the extensiveness of his motion, only to be replaced by new sooty debris. Heartache and pain fled from him in that moment. Visions of his old home, his father’s treachery, a life lived and now passed; it all tumbled away as he gained with each powerful stride, a step closer to his snowy cherub. For a moment they were as one, two ghostly figures painted against a picturesque winter backdrop as they ran side by side. And then he was upon her, and a tangled frenzy of age old importance. Gentleness was only a brief memory in those pinnacle moments that followed, for at that moment she was not the willowy shadow who led the forest wolves, and he was not a warrior who had deserted a home gone wrong. They were the children of the moon, and in it’s gallant rondure it bore witness to their embrace, a song of love and passion. A new beginning to an epic saga.

Larka was almost relieved when he finally caught her in a frenzy of power and desire. her teeth found purchase through his thick fur to the flesh of his neck, nipping him just hard enough for him to feel it, to mark him as her mate. She was too exilerated to feel the pain in her limbs as she lay curled in the snow that always sheltered her. Her gentle pink tongue found the strong taper of his muzzle in a show of affection, her body and soul now complete. She wished to stay there with him forever, in their sheltered glen, but she knew that responsibility was calling to her. Rising to her paws as elegantly as she could muster, Larka's orbs were the shade of molten gold as she gazed at her powerful mate, love and pride evident in her orbs. Her voice was musical as she spoke to him, the tinge of aching lonliness and self dubt that tainted her very soul was cleansed. Shall we return to the others now? Announce to everyone that you are now their Alpha beside me?

His snow white pelt glistened with iridescent ice crystals as they reflected the surreal ambience of the moonshine as it draped around them like a wedding shawl. And she… dressed in a matching gown of frosted snowflakes stood dazzling in that powerful aura that was so captivating. Something felt complete about those moments, and yet oh so new and fresh. Never before had such a power ignited within his heart and soul that he sought to cry out into the night and tell all the world of how he felt. That those joyous moments had been spent with the one entity he wished to spend forever with. He stood proud for her, and hoped that she knew that he would forever be her pillar of strength when she needed it, and her friend when she required it, and forever her love no matter what. When he had clenched the scruff of her neck in a powerful display before uniting more than just their souls, he had known he had ascended in position, taking up rank beside her. But whether he was alpha, or he was omega, he would love her always. And though she spoke to him of greeting the other’s and spreading their good cheer, he remained silent, just for a moment longer as he watched her, consuming her image. He stepped nearer to her then, burying his muzzle in her nape and rumbled against her a warm affection tone. He nodded to her then, as he stepped back away from her, his tail having risen to meet her own carriage, yet it waved with an exuberance from side to side. There were stars in his eyes, and they reflected the heavens he would thank every night for what had befallen them.

Larka followed his gaze up towards the sky where she saw the ever-watchful stars gazing down upon them. A serene smile spread across her muzzle, remembering how he talked about the stars when she had first met him such a short time ago. Her soft growl was almost a purr as she responded to his deeper tone, her golden orbs couldnt leave his frame for the fear that she would wake up from some blissfull dream. Starting to pad back towards the clearing that they had cavorted away from, Larka's plume wavered pleasantly despite the dull ache in her hind limbs. She could walk steadily now, but she wasn't quite back to her former strength yet. Moving elegantly through the snow she smiled as she tilted her crania towards the heavans, the sparkling stars filling her with warmth. They would always remind her of him, even if she couldnt directly see him, she knew that he would always see the same stars that she did, that they would always be connected by their sparkling web. she couldn't bear to be apart from him, so she fell back to lope alongside him, unconsciously matching her stride to his, marveling at how they matched so perfectly. As her shoulder brushed against his her fur tingled. It was so new and...wonderful. Yes she had been a mother twice before but this felt so different...so... right. She couldn't contain it any longer, halting her progress halfway back to her pack. The stars were calling to her, telling her to sing her happiness to them. tilting her crania back to gaze at the stars again, she opened her muzzle to let forth a lilting musical song that stilled every creature within the forest, and had the stars sparkling with approval. The Alpha of the Ravilin Forest was finally where she belonged

For the first time in his life, Atka knew what it was to feel true happiness. Not that his life, prior to his homelands change of direction, had been void of happiness. He had known what it was to be brought up an alpha’s son, knew what it was to feel dignified, accomplished, a contributing member to a strong pack. Yes he had known all these things, and though he had always basked in the glow of a prosperous soldier, he had lived in his father’s shadow for many years. And when the tides of change had turned, shifting the views and politics of the land causing him to flee, he had been unsure of what kind of happiness he would be able to find elsewhere. Surely he could find purpose, for what pack would reject strength and experience after all? But love? He pondered for a moment on why love itself had never touched him in years prior. Certainly there had been many attractive and sweet females in his father’s lands. Perhaps they had thought him unapproachable, too bound down with duties. He was unsure. Perhaps the stars had written his fate across the skies, waiting for this night to blossom.
Her song filled him like liquid poured into every crevice, from every toe to the tip of his nose, he was enveloped by her. And after only a moments passing he to lifted his jaws to the sky and sung unto the brilliance of their moon. His song wrapped around hers like a weaving through, harmonizing with the soulful melody. Their song spoke of completion, and of true happiness. Of a future that surely would be brighter than their past. He sung from the bottom of his heart, and gave everything he had into that howl. It was his heart song, his soul. And when they had finished he could not help but whine softly, letting his tongue roll over her muzzle several times and nipped at the underside playfully. Visions of puppies tumbling from a den washed with suddenness through his mind, and he was taken aback by pride and joy and perhaps impatience for what the coming season would bring.

After the song faded, she returned his gentle carress with her own, still marvelling at just how happy she truly was. Gazing into his beautiful blue orbs she saw the thoughts dancing there and her heart nearly felt like it would burst. Perhaps we should go look for a new den, I cannot use the old one. Times have changed in the Ravilin, I won't have bitter memories spoiling our bright future. She wanted to be alone with him, keep the surreal moments going just a bit longer before reality sought to drag her down again. Besides, she hadn't heard any calls about Faris and her son, so they still must have been searching for them. She knew the reunion would be hard, but it was not she who had abandonded him with young pups.

His mind had wandered as it seemed hers had as well. Yet even apart, they seemed to wander down the same trails in their minds, coming to similar conclusions. A den was of utmost importance, especially now when Larka’s limbs where still not back to their full strength. She needed a comfortable safe place to rest and in the coming month her body would surely begin to take on the weight of the pups they had conceived. Of course there was a chance that their embrace had not been successful as it happens from time to time, but alas they both knew somewhere deep inside that that had not been the case. Perhaps he could convince his beautiful new bride that she could indeed rest, and recover, without her feeling as though she was neglecting the pack lands for she had him to lean on now and their responsibilities would be shared. His mind also traversed the halls unto the known where lied the missing pack members gone in search of Larka’s former mate, the father of her children. There was so much emotional chaos in this realm, and he knew not how he would react when confronted with what he knew was coming. He silently shook of the possibilities of what could happen and looked over towards what had happened. He had found a beautiful mate against all odds, and had found a wonderful promising home.
“I think you are quite right, though I am ashamed to say I hardly know these lands as well as I should... as well as I promise I will come to know. Where shall we look?”

She smiled lovingly at him, remembering that she had called to him the same day of her fateful injury. She was strong and in her prime, it would take alot more than an old cow to bring her down. Hmm...Perhaps we should move south...towards the open meadowlands...there will be plenty of small prey for our children to catch...It will allow me to cover the greatest amount of terrain...I can show you the meteor...the beach with the white cliffs...She snuggled into his chest and moved away, playfulness sparking light and fire within her golden orbs.

Atka considered in his mind, the topography of the land and knew her words to be full of sense and wisdom. Their pups could flourish on the abundance of small rodents that would serve to improve their instinctive hunting skills as well as give them the comfort of one of the most beautiful areas of the territory. One could not imagine the pride that welled within him at the thoughts of the coming years, the raising of their pups and their integration into thriving pack members. He mused about the whole of their future when her affections brought him back to the moment, the experience of closeness still something new and amazing. Eagerly he leaned against her, returning her soft embrace with gentle licks and whines. The gale from the north cast down upon them in a great wave like rush, and its icy breath spoke of the possibility of snowfall. Nipping her playfully he urged them forward, before the weather caught up with them and made their search far more difficult.
“I think that is a wonderful idea, the meadowlands are perfect for such a place. I wonder… how the rest of the pack fairs … I have caught no scent of them at all."

Larka tore her gaze away from him to gaze up at the canopy. The snow would be deeper in the meadowlands of the Ravilin, with no trees to protect them from the worst of the snow and wind. Everything was a trade off when choosing a den, it seemed. Picking up her pace she headed south with the determination of a mother who knew she was fighting both weather and time. Fortunately she had the long limbs of an arctic wolf, which allowed her to have a ground consuming stride that required little effort. The Ravilin territory was so large that the storm mostly passed over them, heading west to east. A gentle snow was falling as they came to the outskirts of the forest, and she caught her breath. It had been so long since she had visited the vast, rolling openness of the gently curved hills. Her instincts took over she loped along the edge of the trees, searching for a particular site that she had seen several years back. An hour later she found the exact site that she remembered. The den site Larka had chosen was not a den. It would have to be dug fresh and new. The gentle hill was sheltered by a few mighty trees, while the den entrance she envisioned would spill out into the meadow, where the pups would have plenty of room to play and grow. There was even a stream that was large enough to fight the frigid temperatures, winding its way out of the trees and into the meadow. Larka also knew a special secret about this place that had burned it in her memory for when she found her soul mate....soul mate.... Atka...my beloved Soul Mate...when the pups are first opening their eyes they will behold every hue of wildflower blanketing this hill...it is amazing...Her heart swelled to bursting with pride and love as she envisioned her little bundles of fur romping around in the flowers. She also knew the abundance of flowers would serve another purpose. The flowers are so numerous...they will cloud predator's senses...hiding our children from harm...Larka stopped daydreaming with a shake of her crania. She moved to where she wanted the opening of the den, facing the open expanse of terrain. she started to claw at the frigid ground, hoping that there weren't too many large rocks and roots.

The landscape swirled around them in curtains of cascading iridescent flakes which reflected the dull but almost surreal light which peered hauntingly through the overcast shifting of clouds above them. If one was not careful, and took precise note of the direction they were headed and the scent markers of their path, it would surely be possible to confuse directions and become disoriented as the snow thickened, suffocating the air between it’s furry of intricate snowflakes. The landscape seemed to descend into a flatter plane of existence, and as the precession of gallant trees dropped into the backdrop of their world, a vast meadowland stretched out before them. Its magnificence was hidden of course, disguised below a sheet of thick ice and snow, layers which had been building since the first snowfall of winter. But below… yes hidden deep below was the promise of life, just like the life hidden deep within Larka’s womb. And when the frigid grasp of winter was finally relinquished, the soil would give way to seedlings and seedlings would give way to frondescence, and then … oh how the beauty of this place would bloom. Atka could see it materialize right before his eyes as if a mirage haunting his vision. His mate had chosen widely as he knew she would. Her capabilities as a leader and a mother were far more extensive than she was credited most the time. The state of the pack brought a wince to him inwardly, as well as the lack of understanding where it had all spiraled from. Of course he was knew to their saga, but he could not piece together the troubled they all seemed to be bound with. Shaking his head of it all, he turned back towards his mate who had already begun a tireless effort at tearing into the frozen soil beneath the snow, etching away at an outline and then seeking to bore it out. “Our pups will come to know the happiness of their beautiful pack lands and of loving parents my beloved one”. He moved quickly to stand at her side, eager to help in building their home. His nails dug deep into the resistant soil, snagging few roots but several sharp rocks as he put all his weight and energy into the dig.

Larka was fully focused on digging, but the mindless task allowed her brain to wander down darker pathways. Nasir...it has been so many years surely you are nearing death...Your threat to uproot the family I have worked so hard to create looms heavily upon my soul...when will I hear word from you? surely your brother will not tell me...he is so lost amongst his foolish ideals of loner mentality... How long must I be made to wait, silently agonizing over when the day will come that you or one of your descendants will rip the forest from me, as if uprooting a mighty weeping willow...will you wait for me to be burdened with my children...or will you wait until I am feeble and old?
Where are you Nasir? Is the forest truly cursed like my daughter thinks it is...is that why you abandoned your clan's homeland?Worry lines etched her elegant crania with stress until she focused again on her den, the first few pages of a new chapter in a new life... Every so often she would brush against her strong and dedicated mate, as if drawing solace and comfort like a child does from a favored possession. Where will I be...several years from now? Will I be a roving loner, cast away like the poor dedicated groom who nurtured the winning horse...only to have the all powerful owner yank that beloved creature away without so much as a thank you?

The work was harsh, straining upon every muscle fiber and tendon throughout their bodies. But they tirelessly threw themselves into the task, knowing that it was a vital piece of the equation that would provide an adequate livelihood for their children. Atka knew not how long they dug, side by side, moving in unison as if they had become one, a single entity, with a single purpose. Was this not nature at its greatest? The sense, the strive, the need… to provide for their young, to nurture and care for, and to someday see them thrive. Atka had never envisioned himself as a father, and yet now he found he could hardly contain the joy and impatience he felt. He knew not what the future would bring for both he and his mate. But he knew this… they would be together, partners in this life and the next. And their children would know of their undying love and perhaps someday they would know what it was like to be in his position now, anticipating the arrival of new life.
At long last they had carved their way into the mountainside and delved within the recesses of the earth. The catacomb was not overly spacious; it had a snugness and coziness to it that would bring comfort. And as the burly arctic wolf stepped back from the scene, his pallid fur drenched with soil and debris he gave a nod of approval to their den and turned to look longingly at his mate. They had constructed a fine home and hoped that she felt the same. A fire danced in his eyes, for although he did not know what the years to come, nor a mere hours time would bring them, they were here, together now.
