K A Y T U
He moved through the crusts of time, bringing with him the ages on the ends of the hairs of his pelt. Years gone by, earth stirred below by waves and water, wind and time, rustled against his sides as he moved along the dark tunnel, nose feeling out the way. He hadn't been down this pathway before, and the way was indeed pockmarked with deep holes, opening out wide into a cavern here or there, and then narrowing so that he had to squeeze his way through into another, upper chamber. Down here, the tree roots were too old and rotten to use to help him climb, and besides, he couldn't have seen some of them if he'd tried looking. It was dark. Solid dark, the after-dark of the depths.
Then, there was a stirring above him, and he felt his heart quicken to the song of the wind against the dry earth. Almost there! Upon the dead plains of Akeldama, as the evening stars were clustered behind the clouds in hiding, a shadow that bore the blackness of the soul slipped into the world from the very heart of the earth. His form didn't arrive gracefully, but rather it heaved itself forward using his forelegs, braced against the ground. His hindquarters came next, pressing dirt down behind him as he struggled free of his containment, his prison, his home.
He staggered then, losing his balance as fresh air struck his muzzle and made him almost cry out from the sheer exhilaration of it, tingling down his senses. Never before! How could the up-dwellers stand this? At least it wasn't overly bright, not as much as he had been expected to believe it would be. But where was the round circle, the giver of light? Perhaps it was mere legend...
The wolf moved sideways, making way for his beloved, his Mirelyn. His eyes, with heavily dilated pupils, tried to narrow upon her form, to see her now, for the first time, in all her splendor. For before this, he had only ever felt her, touched her, tasted her... now he wanted with all his heart, withheld the joyous feeling, to see her. He could never tell her, though, for she didn't believe like he did. Sometimes, he was sure, she thought he was just plain strange. He was glad that they had chosen such a strange brute for her, though, for Kaytu cherished every moment he was with her. She was an excellent partner in the ring, too.
He stood aside, stretching his form out to his height. The gray wolf's mane ruffled up, thicker than normal even for the wolves of the island in the winter, and his shoulders squared. He lifted his head, gazing down at the ground-cave, waiting for his mate. He didn't realize that he, with his dark blue eyes that she would never have seen before, either, was a handsome specimen too. He was a knight in shinning gray armor, untouched by the world but for the scars on his pelt, scars they shared. Memories, times, mates since he couldn't remember in his four years. He loved her, and in his eyes the expression was obvious as he waited for her to come to him.

The infinite darkness no longer held claim upon them. A mission given to them to find the escapee and return him to the clan if he rendered little resistance, or to destroy him on the spot so that no opposition would come to them. Mirelyn sought the second option, naturally. A meager brute with no mate was pointless within their clan. Her teeth snatched at the air just at the thought of the wasted energy of rearing that whelp.
Her hazeled eyes blinked as light began to touch her eyes. It was an odd feeling, finally being able to see something other than black. Her other senses growled, disliking the fact that they now had a new sense to fight with. Her pawsteps slowed slightly, caution telling her to be careful when proceeding. Even so, now it was easier because she could see where the walls were without having to rely on her fur brushing it or listening for the echo. Instead, she poised herself closer to the wall as a corner approached. Her paws angled themselves to the left of the wall while her hind feet placed themselves on the wall and pushed off, clearing the corner and gaining momentary speed.
The wind toyed with her coat; that strange, new smelling wind. She already found herself hating it, and she searched for the only other wolf--her only connection now to her clan. Mirelyn had known he was close, that was a given, but she wanted him closer. Her brownish fur alerted her that she had passed him, and it took only seconds for her footfalls to stop under a beam of light. The white splash on her face that chased away the timber glistened, emphasizing her darker eyes.Darling, her feathery voice floated through the air, drawling what is it you wait for? Her crania shook a little as she spoke, a small smile pulling her lips upwards in a pleasant curve.
The missionary in her tugged for control of her legs, wanting them to hurry, but it only managed to lift one of her paws into the air and make her tilt her head slightly. Orbs were scanning his features, mostly his face, for any display of emotion she could gather from him, careful not to not to trip too far into the oceanic eyes he possessed. Arched banner waved silently behind her, she awaited a an explanation or movement, wondering what had gotten a hold of him.

But he as blessed, Kaytu was. He knew it more as her form slipped from the earth, erupting more gracefully than he had and bringing her senses to heel immediately. The brightness of the night - so foreign to him - clung to her body, the graceful curve of her shoulders and hips, the edge of her jawline as it ran down to her neck, and onward into her belly. Timber browns, he didn't know the name of the color since color existed only in light. Darkness and light, chased away by flecks of ivory in her smooth pelt, accentuating the depths of her eyes which he had never seen the hues of. Was this what had drawn the slick young whelp from his mother's entombed protection? He felt a sympathetic rustle in his heart, but he eliminated the spark with the duty that had been laid upon him.
Finish our task or die as outcasts. He bowed his muzzle, the strange look in his eyes smoldered in sapphire flames. I wait for you, my love. Let us go. He turned, fighting the temptation to close his eyes so that he might not be distracted by this strange terrain, these images assaulting his tender eyes. The gray wolf padded along silently, allowing his feet to get the feel of the earth here. It was dry, dusky. There was no familiar moisture, no damp to sooth him. Instead the atmosphere was arid, tanged with the sweet metallic scent of old blood. History was here, yes. Part of their legend was here.
They traveled together, he keeping by her side but leading a tad at the shoulder as was custom. There was no telling what creatures existed here, in the upper world, so they stayed together they had been trained. He had been told stories since cubhood of monsters, beasts that ruled these realm. There were wolves here, too; but of a more brutal kind. He understood their need for secrecy. Those above would seek out their clan, their colony, and destroy them if they knew what riches their life held. So Kaytu's eyes were sharp, painfully so, growing accustomed to use in a less dim world and finding all traces of movement made him slightly dizzy with the joy of using a new, forgotten sense.
He could tell Mirelyn didn't feel the same. He felt her tenseness when she left the cave, something that he lacked. He knew he should be worried, too, but the dreamer in him found only glory in this expedition. This adventure would be one they would tell the others, and the clan-cubs, when they returned with the brute who had stolen away in a moment of lax attention. He didn't see the need to rip the brute to shreds, as was their second plan. Kaytu was sly, and he knew words could be as sharp as needles. Was the old male the straggler's biological father at all? Was he, really, dead? Questions and answers, thoughts and worries... each could be planted and brought to fruit, if given time. He was confident in their mission.

Orbs glistened for only a second at his words, the smile growing slightly. Kaytu had always said such things, and sometimes the fae was unsure if she was to believe him or not. Mirelyn could never find it in her to reply to such lavish words... even though she often used them in different context.
That... brightness... She couldn't go on, not having words to describe how she was feeling. Had she been a pup, she would have feared all of these new things, the unknown rearing its fangs. Had she been alone, she would be so very much more unnerved. She glanced to Kaytu, knowing he would take care of them both. She would do her best to keep her hold on sanity in this new place, just like in any fierce battle.
Her nose twitched, attempting to find any trace of the traitor. The quicker they did this, the more honor they would obtain, the better it would be for them. Not only that, mating season was drawing near, another reason the clan could afford to send higher ranking members. Most of the pups had a sense of their own and had bonded with their partners in some fashion, requiring less adults to educate them in their ways.
My... I think I may go blind. Mirelyn's nose scrunched in slightly disgust. She somewhat playfully but at the same time boredly bumped into her partner, ready to face whatever monster might be guarding the gates to this new world. ...north? Fate is the red crown around our door... Kaytu glanced kindly at Mirelyn when she bumped him, a smile worn easily on his handsome face. How do you even know what way north is, without the guiding stones? he queried silently, his eyes moving from his mate's pretty face to the spots of light in the open sky above them. I wonder what those are? he said quietly, his voice intentionally kept low. There were so many things up here, he hardly could keep his questions to himself. He knew, though, that questions in general weren't tolerated below, so he forced himself to keep silent... but he couldn't help a few more slipping out from between his sharp fangs.
I don't know which way we go, but his scent leads this way... He walked along, his pace easy. His eyes adjusted naturally as the sky began to grow brighter, and so the sun was almost on the horizon when he paused, looking shocked, off in the direction of the new source of brightness. What's that? he said, his voice a hoarse whisper. He stood in the silence then as the orb crept further along the horizon, moving up, becoming more and more bright. Kaytu squinted his eyes, finally looking away when it hurt too much to keep his eyes on the strange new figure.
He didn't think whatever it was would hurt them, but already tears stained the edges of his gray mask and muzzle from the pain of what he was unused to. He pressed his muzzle against his mate's side, he had stopped walking when he had noticed the sun. Come, let us find shelter until we knew what this... thing... is.
The gray wolf started walking again, this time quicker as he felt the ground with his forepaws, hoping to find another cave before it grew too bright. He didn't think to use his eyes. His nose quivered, and suddenly he knew there was a hole, a cave, a few meters off. He half dashed to it, sticking his muzzle in first to scent for danger before his mate came too close. Once satisfied that it was safe, he turned his head back toward Mirelyn. Come, love, let us stay sheltered until this... thing... leaves us. He waited, allowing her to crawl down into the hole first. It wasn't deep, hardly, but it was deep enough for them to both be out of the dreaded sunlight.

Mirelyn's auds twitched as she realized her blunder. She was not used to this at all. There was no way to tell north from south, east from west. There was no way to tell what kind of world they were in because they knew nothing of it! This is so very disorienting... She shook her head, attempting to shake the light from her eyes.
Her orbs remained closed off from the world, unable to function in the heightening brightness. Ears folded, she scented for Kaytu, knowing that he was searching for someplace to hide. It was almost embarrassing to her that they were losing time merely because their eyes were betraying them, but there was nothing to do.
Kaytu did not have to tell her twice to stay put when she joined him in their shelter. Slowly, she reopened her eyes, able to tolerate what light was where they were. What kind of doom have we fallen into? She would make this wolf pay for making her have to walk into this blasphemy. Her teeth peeked out of her maw at the mere thought, and fire would have formed there had she been a dragon.
Should we look for a fellow wolf's help? Mirelyn would feel defeated if that were to happen, but she admitted it might be critical to their mission. To be able to properly function, one must have all of the information they could get. Her sore orbs rest on her partner, mind distracted from the pain as it took in the pleasant sight.

Kaytu laid silently in the little cavern as the sun lifted above the horizon and peaked into their hiding place, chasing away the shadows at the edges. He was in awe of this, whatever it was. Perhaps the light from the orb was the sun, something he had heard about but never seen. The brute didn't answer his mate's questions, for he was busy pondering over the source of the light and its power. Where does it come from? Would it hurt them if they were touched by all of its light? He didn't know, and this bothered him. How did the up-dwellers live?
Finally he brought his attention back to Mirelyn and found that she had apparently asked him a question, for her head was turned in his direction. They were so close in the cave, physically, that he had felt her neck muscles move around toward him. He racked his brain, not letting the fact that he hadn't heard her show in his confusion, before he finally registered what she had said. I don't know that we should speak to many, if any, up here. We cannot let them know about us, about our clan. From what he had been told, those above ground would fall over themselves in their rush to take what they had from them.
Yet how would they manage up here without help? Well, if that runt could do it, then they could. He wouldn't admit it, but the run-away had had more than enough courage. No one ran away and lived to tell about it. The wolf had known that and chosen to try to escape anyway, immediately threatening their clan's secrecy and ways. Kaytu's eyes were once again out of focus as he gazed at the entrance to the hole, idly watching the shadows move as clouds, unbeknownst to him, scuttled across the open morning sky.

[glow=seagreen,2,000]M i r e l y n[/glow] The bride is shining when the groom is gold... A jewel on a ring was never so bold... Mirelyn's tail wrapped tightly around her haunches, angling her eyes towards the ground. She couldn't recall being told of anything about what was above, only fairy tales of what happened if they should flee. The orb in the sky did not seem as if it would leave incredibly soon, and the wolfess sighed.
She glanced at the light, watching as the shadows cowered away from it. Should they be afraid, too? A brown paw was lifted and edged into the light. It wasn't incredibly bad... in fact, it was almost comforting. Warm. Her orbs could not tolerate it, but the rest of her was fine. Mirelyn turned around and stuck most of her body in the sun, making sure to keep her delicate eyes away from it. Certainly this is harmless. Her banner swished almost triumphantly, a small smile on her facade. I think... perhaps, we are just not used to the impressive... brightness. Crania was tilted at a confused angle, looking at the sun hitting her.
Still, her pillars ached to run, to chase the traitor. The more they stalled the farther away he'd get, and they had no idea how far they needed to travel. Mirelyn's snout scrunched slightly, battling the smoldering anger within.

Kaytu watched his mate curiously as she edged around and placed herself into the sunfall. He turned his head sideways, curiously, for obviously she was fine. Maybe it is just our eyes. He didn't shift too much, however, for he was still considering different things that they would have to encounter. Mirelyn's tenseness spoke of her desire to leave, quickly, to hunt down the renegade. He wanted to find him, too, but there was something holding him back. He wanted, badly, to learn of this new place. There was so much different here, probably so much dangerous, too.
This would be his only chance, ever, to know of it. Once they found the traitor and dragged him back to the caves, they too would return home. They would never have another opportunity like this again in their lives, in fact, no other wolf in their clan would. And so, Kaytu wanted to learn about it as much as he could, even if he was never allowed to impart the information he learned to anyone else down below.
The day passed mostly in silence, or silence except for Mirelyn's words. He didn't speak much. Instead he still stared at the shadows, and he was amazed when they lengthened and stretched out across the floor. Eventually he closed his eyes and doze off, his slumbering breath easy and comforting. He wasn't worried, overly. He knew they could find the one who had run, and so his dreams were of the fangs that stretched down from the roof of the home-cave, like a protective mother's threat to the outside world. He never thought of them as bars to their own personal prison.

[glow=seagreen,2,000]M i r e l y n[/glow] The bride is shining when the groom is gold... A jewel on a ring was never so bold... Mirelyn quietly regarded their location as the day passed, the tenseness of the situation passing as the hours went by. She was determined to not let her guard down should some savage beast suddenly appear at the tope of their shelter. She would not go out in such an unglorious way, oh no. Her eyelids fought her, however, and soon she found her wavering gaze on her already slumbering mate.
He was so lighthearted with the whole ordeal, it was strange for her. Kaytu seemed to want to take everything slowly, take everything in. She just wanted to rush off, complete what they had come for, and then think about consequences. Her tail twitched like that of a feline as she pondered her options. It always came back to one of the very first principals she was taught as a cub: never stray from your partner.
Lazily, she moved her bodice from her spot and let herself rest close to her Katyu, snuggling into his fur, melding their browns. With a final yawn she surrendered her eyes back to the darkness, allowing dreams--or nightmares--to embrace her stressed mind.

K A Y T U
The day passed, and with it Kaytu found much needed sleep for the journey ahead. His dreams were peaceful, and only once when his mate came to rest beside him again did he nearly return to the waking world. Finally, when the strongest of the light had passed and the evening hour was upon the world, the gray wolf's blue eyes opened to the world once more in wonder. He lifted his head and looked about him, remembering where he was and his reasons for being there. The shadows on the cave's entrance had vanished.
Kaytu stood, easing himself away from Mirelyn so as not to immediately wake her. He wanted time to think alone before her overeager mind was up and buzzing with thoughts of recapture. He stepped quietly outside of their burrow and let his gaze travel upon the open land. There was a faint mist in the distance, and far, far away he thought he could detect bumps on the horizon. He didn't have any idea what they were, but maybe his weak eyes were just struggling to comprehend something normal about this above-ground terrain.
His nose sniffed, inhaling to learn of the things around them. Wolves, in general, have an amazing sense of smell. But is it not true that when one ability is less, the others are more? So it was for the brute, and his mate, that their noses and ears worked better than average where their eyesight had been useless in darkness before. He could tell there were other wolves nearby, but none were the wolf that they sought. Sighing, Kaytu turned back into the cave and came to stand beside his mate. He pressed his nose gently in the fur around her cheeks, waking her with a soft rumbling in his chest.
Wake, love, it's time to decide what our next move is.

[glow=seagreen,2,000]M i r e l y n[/glow] The bride is shining when the groom is gold... A jewel on a ring was never so bold... Mirelyn's body was restored well in the new land, nothing tormenting her while she slept. Her ears flickered as she thought she felt movement, but it wasn't enough to fully rouse her. Moments later, she felt the touch of who she knew was Kaytu, and she rolled onto her back to wake herself up. The cold ground on her back did the trick, and her hazel orbs opened to a darker sky--a more tolerable world.
She quickly flipped onto her feet, her eyes zipping around the crevices. When they found nothing but her mate, her tail twitched in satisfaction. Mirelyn stretched out her front pillars, easing the tiredness out of them. We chase after him, that's what we're supposed to do, no? She hopped up to the surface once more, her nose twitching with the scent of all of the blood.
For a second, the wolfess was discouraged with the whole ordeal. How big was this place? If it was very large, it could take them a very long time to even find a hint of the brute, not to mention bring him back. Her eyes narrowed grumpily before she went back to Kaytu, tapping her nose under his chin. Whatever we do, we should get going. Let's just go that way. Mirelyn nodded towards what would have been the meadows had she known the name for them. She wouldn't relay to him that she had lost heart in this quest, for as long as she had him she didn't care where they were.
