Cassiel bounded along with the herd, losing himself amongst their powerful limbs and heaving chests. His breaths came and went easily, breathing in the scent of the terror and euphoria of the other wolves as the hunt commenced. The sounds of a struggle reached him then, and he turned sharply, cutting the deer nearest to him away from where the pack wolves were bringing down their kill. He snapped a few more times, for good measure, and then turned his powerful frame around and sprinted back toward his family.
He came quickly upon them, and what he saw made his heart stop within his chest and his throat constrict. He saw Epitaph lunge at the deer. He swelled up with joy, tassel flying up in pleasure, the hunt temporarily forgotten as he watched the black wolf make contact with the caribou. Then he saw the beast fall, and with it, the dark colored she-wolf went down, was kicked, and rolled several meters away until she was once more sitting.
It was then that Cassiel's heart throbbed with a pain so deep it surprised him, and he felt himself stumble. His forelegs gave way and he collapsed, so great was his sorrow. The emotions had spiked too quickly for the old brute, both joy and sadness at their greatest lengths, and he felt himself momentarily slip from the present. His eyes darkened, and he had to blink several times before he was able to come back to himself. When he did there was a great wariness within them, and the white wolf didn't rise from the earth, letting the hunt end as it may.
Not my Epi, not my love. He had recognized the black wolf after seeing into her blood-smeared face. The features were the same, the build was the same, even the eyes had the same acidic look. Yet this face was a younger face than his Epitaph's, and although he was glad to know his daughter was alive, her appearance caused him more pain than he had gone through thus far. Cassiel didn't utter a noise, he simply laid there, gazing across the ground to Beryl's young form, confused.

Artist: entaie.deviantart.com/ Luma hung on for dear life. She saw a black blur slam into the side of the bull from the corner of her eye and felt the bull began to fall. She managed to clear her legs, and let go only long enough to land safely. The bull kicked out at the wolf that had knocked it over and it went flying. Luma assumed it was Basile and felt a surge of anger spark through her. She dove for the jugular of the beast, sinking her sharp fangs in before in could try to rise. She tore her head from side to side, feeling her fangs ripping through the skin and muscle. Her teeth gnashed back and forth, sawing off the meat. She finally tore free, a mouth of caribou meat clamped in her jaws. The beast gasped, for she had truly torn it's throat open. She paid it no mind though, as the legs began to slow their kicking. Blood dripping down her front and she turned quickly to look to the black from, strangely though, Basile was just trotting up from a distance. Her orbs landed on the other black form and for a moment, she swore the Alphess was back. Then, the age of the wolf registered, and she knew without a doubt Beryl had returned. She smiled, happy and sad at the same time. Her orbs searched for Jaden, hoping he'd made it off the animal okay. They landed on Cassiel, however. He seemed to have collapsed on the ground, staring at Beryl with a dazed expression. Luma felt fear grip her chest and she spun around to face Basile again. Basile, who too had seen this shape so like his Mother's felt the same shock Luma had felt. His green eyes stared in disbelief at his sisters face, and he found a pup's voice inside him crying for it's mother. Mother is gone. If this does not prove it, then nothing will. He felt a bitter taste on his tongue and felt Luma's stare on him, it was then he saw his Father and his sadness turned to dread. Surely his Father would not be lost to them too. Aisha, having shadowed Cass the whole time of course saw the dark form. She, however, somehow knew it was her sister and not her mother. Amidst the chaos, she managed to give a joyous cry. Beryl! Sister, you've come home to us! She then saw her sister tossed through the air like a common twig. She gasped and ran to her, the shock of her Mother's 'ghost' not falling on her at all. Facing Basile now she began to shout orders to him, taking the lead as a beta does when the Alpha is unable. Don't stand and gawk, Basile! You know better then that! Tend to your sister, no, Aisha is already doing it. Check the pack and gather them together. No other mouthful is allowed out of that carcass until Cassiel has risen. Her yellow orbs landed on Aisha with a relieved expression. How my dear, out of all of us did you it was our Beryl and not Epi? She thought, now trotting to Cassiel. Her pulse still buzzed with adrenaline and her front still have blood dripping and drying down it. When she reached Cassiel she crouched, placing her nose to the tip of his. She felt his breath and nuzzled him. Cassiel, my friend. Please do not stare like that. You're unnerving us all. Can you speak, Cassiel? Focus on me, Cass. She lay in front of him, blocking his view of Beryl. She placed a lick on his cheek, hoping to wake him. Please, Cassiel, come back. We all need you here. I n...I...I'm not afraid to bite you if you don't. You're our Alpha Cass. Look at what your Clan has done. Do you see our feast? Do you not wish to eat? Her heart thrummed with fear, afraid that Cassiel would not come back, she barely felt embarrassed for having slipped. It was true. He was her dearest friend. The one wolf she was closest to. Do not leave like everyone else has left us, Cass. We can stick it through together. She said this without thinking, but she knew it was true. For she now truly believed Epitaph was gone. Beryl seemed to be the wake up call.

tCassiel shook his head back and forth slowly, not registering the happening around him until his faithful beta approached and touched his muzzle. He blinked again then, his eyes slowly growing a lighter color of brown as some of the shock faded. I thought she was my Epi, he murmured quietly, for Luma's ears alone. I thought there for a moment she was back. Now I know, she won't be back. I don't believe she would have just left me, and her family. She's gone. His sadness was great for a moment more, and he bowed his head.
When he lifted his eyes again to Luma, the sadness lingered there in the depths, but only those closest to him would see the misery he was hiding. I would never leave you, Luma, or my clan. The brute, feeling his age quite suddenly, pushed with his hind legs in order to regain the balance in his front as he rose. He stood shakily, hoping the rest of the clan hadn't seen his terrible weakness and known it for what it was. He stepped forward, offering a slight limp in his stride. Fabricated, of course, but maybe it would let them believe he had really tripped.
The white wolf approached the others, eyes over bright as they landed on Beryl's form and jerked away again. He looked at the carcass for a moment, trying to regain his composure. When he brought his attention back to Beryl he was calm again. Beryl, you have returned. It gladdens me. His voice, was it flatter than it was when he had greeted his son Basile and daughter Aisha? Perhaps, but the young black fem wouldn't know that. He smiled at her, genuinely glad she was safe and alive, and then turned back to the kill.
We did well, he rumbled, his deep voice quiet now. The herd had left, leaving behind the earth still in the air, disturbed from their passing. Let us feast on this meal together, as we hunted together. Dismissing all formalities, the white alpha signaled to the others that they might eat with him. Cass approached the caribou and began to eat, but his bites were small and fragile, and his eyes kept glancing to Beryl, sneaking looks at her when he thought the others weren't looking.

B E R Y L The dark wolfess sat still, feeling the blood from her wound oozing around the base of her ears. She didn't bother to try to stem the flow, though, it would quickly clot... she hoped. She was more concerned with the clan, for her appearance wasn't exactly what she'd wished it to be. Beryl didn't know what she had expected, but it certainly wasn't the look she saw on her father's face before Luma's well remembered form blocked his view. Her bright green up changed focus when she heard her name and saw Cassiel's image, her sister Aisha, running toward her. It was then that she tried to stand, and when she did she felt the blood whirl in her head. Instead of standing, her rump hit the ground again, much to her chagrin. She shifted, making it look as though she really wasn't standing up... but then Beryl realized what she was doing, caving to social pressures, and she adjusted her look once again. She wasn't a pleasant wolf to be around. She must remember that. Keep that face. Beryl lifted her nose as Aisha approached and released a soft rumble, not quite a friendly greeting, but a pleasantry she rarely allowed herself to show. Aisha, it's been moons since I've seen you. Or anyone of the clan, for that matter. She tried standing again, this time slowly, and attempted to make herself look more dignified. She didn't know what to say, though, to anyone. She was glad when Cass rose from the ground, but saddened at the same time as she saw the effort he had to put into the move. Her tassel even briefly wavered when he addressed her, and she didn't expect anything friendlier from him. Although he had said they could eat, Beryl didn't immediately approach. Instead, she looked around, letting her eyes gather information about those present. She saw Luma, her sister Aisha and brother Basile, a young female her own age, and... that same handsome wolf she'd seen just before she went down. Her eyes narrowed, immediately disliking the feeling that arose when she saw him. It wasn't him that she was irked with, though, it was something else, internal. Her eyes sparked, dangerously angry, and she held his form in her sights. No emotion but disgust showed there, but she finally managed to look back to Aisha, just waiting for her over bubbly sister to start talking again.

Aisha had pranced up to her sister. The contrast in personalities was easily seen, especially when they stood along side each other. It stood out almost as much as the difference in pelt color. While Aisha greatly resembled Cassiel, Beryl seemed to be a copy of Epitaph. She grinned as Beryl greeted her. True sister, it has been too long. She took this time to glance around and saw Luma trying to comfort her Father, who lay on the ground. He rose soon, though, and walked toward the Caribou, complimenting the group. Like the naive thing she was, Aisha assumed this meant all was well. She gave a mental shrug and turned back to Beryl. Eat with us, Beryl. It is the first feast for us to take together with our new members. Her brown orbs glittered with happiness. Basile was awoken from his small shock by Luma. He trot toward the carcass, shaking himself. Come, let us gather here, to eat. He called, faltering. He looked to Beryl, his one sister who had taken after their mother. He remembered they'd not had much to do with each other, to be exact, she'd clearly dismissed him the first meeting they'd had. He managed a wry smile, hoping maybe now they could become acquainted better. He glanced back to Cassiel, seeing he was moving now. He was relieved to say the least, and silently thanked Luma. Luma had sighed, her sad orbs staring into Cassiel's. I know friend. I know. We will talk about it later. For now you have a clan to feast with, and I'm sorry about the scare, it couldn't have been helped though. She felt a slight smile to Cass at his comment about never leaving her or the clan. I know Cass, you are one of the few who I know I can depend on. She sighed and walked to his side, copying him in the hopes the others would too.

B E R Y L Beryl nodded absently to Aisha's invitation. Her eyes had followed her father's form to the meal, and she was beginning to become unnerved by his not so casual glances in her direction. The young fem shook her head suddenly, and then found herself being watched again, this time by the other black wolf. She met his gaze evenly, remembering that day many moons before, her first day out of the den, when he had stared at her. Her ears, like a memory, pricked forward aggressively, and her hackles bristled up. I still don't know you, for all that I know you're calling now, Basile. The she-wolf grunted, and then remembered something... I saw a wolf by the borders as I ran here, father, she rumbled quietly, not wanting to draw any more attention to herself than she was already receiving. She had only just recalled the baffled looking young male she'd sped past on her way to join the Kameskai wolves, and although most wolves might have felt guilty for not mentioning it sooner, Beryl merely felt like it was a fact that needed to be stated.

Keeya had hung back silently while the others had gathered themselves together. This new black female had knocked the pack off their feet. From what Keeya had heard, she was a sister to Basile and Aisha, and apparently looked similar to their alpha. The grey female had been slightly taken aback at the alpha's weakness, but he had now seemed to recover, and had given the order to eat. The scent of the bull they had taken as prey wafted up to her nostrils and filled her body with a longing for food. Though the others did not appear to be making much of an effort with the carcass, Keeya decided to make the most of the great feed lying before her. She walked up to it slowly, and took up a position away from the others, as she did not want to be pushed away. As she tore a chunk of flesh away from the carcass, she eyed the new wolf, who, at this moment announced that there was another male waiting just inside the border.

Seeing that the air of tension still hung around, Basile decided to try his best to ignore it. He didn't like thinking of his Father collapsing like he did. Basile walked up beside Keeya, ignoring the fact that she had deliberately placed herself away from the others. He wasn't sure why she did that, he assumed it was from respect. He walked up to her, and touch her side with his shoulder. You did very well, Keeya. He then gave her a teasing smile, and bumped her. He dug in then, hunger taking over his sense to be silly. His ears flicked toward Beryl at the comment about the loner. He'd seen her words to him and couldn't help smile as he ate. He found her attitude a cute attribute, rather then off-putting. Luma glanced to Cass as he ate. She felt a great deal of sorrow for him, having to suffer that scare. Beryl's words made her turn to the younger fem. I'm sorry your arrival was not the happy event it should be. She gave her a smile though. You've grown so much, Beryl. You look as beautiful as your mother. It was that that shocked us the most. We thought you were her. She turned to Cass. Would you like me to attend to the loner Cass? She wasn't sure how long he'd waited there, for them to show. She didn't like an unwatched loner on borders, nor did she like to be rude. Aisha saw Beryl glance to Jaden. She felt her stomach swell with jittery butterflies and she grinned. That's Jaden, Sister. Isn't he handsome? Her easily distracted nature lead her to trot to Jaden and compliment his hunting skills. You are a very skilled hunter, Jaden. Her smile reached her orbs.

Cassiel had to force himself not to jump when Luma spoke to him, for his eyes had still been lingering on his daughter, mystified. The white wolf's head turned toward his beta, and the darkness in his brown orbs cleared momentarily as there was speak of official pack duties. He nodded as he rumbled, Yes, please do Luma. I trust your judgment. If you find him worthy, accept him into the clan. It was strange that, as alpha, he himself wasn't going. He didn't think of it though; his beta was more than capable.
The brute's muzzled turned back to the carcass, ignoring the other wolves as he again began nibbling at the meat. He stood there quietly, not gorging like he might have normally. His glances grew less and less confused as he kept looking to Beryl, but instead they became more thoughtful. He heard Luma's words to his daughter, and inwardly he knew she was right. It wasn't Beryl's fault that she was blessed with her mother's good looks or bright green eyes. It was, though, just enough to throw Cass off his guard.
Cass shook his head then, slowly, denying several thoughts at once. Finally he looked back up at the others after finishing his portion. He licked at his chops, cleaning away some of the gore off his lower jowls, and started away from them. Usually the pack would rest or play after a hunt. He felt a rest was necessary. After all, things were good and Luma had things under control. The others could do as they pleased.

B E R Y L The young wolfess listened to her sister's amicable chat, her eyes only once more glancing to the brute Aisha had dubbed Jaden. Once more the fem's eyes flashed, but the look wasn't as pleasant even as the one she had given her own brother, Basile. Beryl brought her attention to Luma as the beta spoke to her, and the black one dipped her head in respect and thanks for her words. Her eyes roved again after that, alighting on all the wolves present. She noticed that Basile had approached the other young female, and her curiosity was peaked even though there was no emotions on her face. Beryl's ears did prick, however, when Cass told Luma to go to the borders. She didn't say her thoughts aloud, but they existed never-the-less. Why isn't he going to check the loner out for himself? Didn't he used to? It was confusing; strange. How much else was she to discovered changed in the few moons she had been gone, exploring on her own?

The young brute had barely managed to leap away from the falling animal when the new femme had knocked it over. She had come at the beast so fast, a dark streak of black visible out of the corner of his eye. At first he had thought Basile had managed to catch up to where the kill was being made. That had seemed impossible, however, and it was cleared up as soon as he scented her. The scent had been female, which he thought to himself with a chuckle had made it all the more likely to be Basile. Yet, she had a unique smell, one less strongly Kameskai. He had hung back a moment, watching this newcomer, waiting to see how she would be greeted by his pack. Her name was Beryl, which he thought to be a very nice name, indeed. Not as nice as Jaden, nor as sweet to taste as Aisha, but a nice name nonetheless. More than nice, it seemed to suit her. It was smooth, cold, and seemingly devoid of emotion.
He watched her interact with the rest of the pack, particularly the ivory coated Aisha. The looked so incredibly different... he had trouble believing that they were sisters. He noted that each cast a glance his way, one clearly more welcoming than the other. He couldn't help wondering why Beryl was so hostile toward him. That made three, now, who disliked him. He shook his head of such thoughts, turning instead to what was positive. Aisha was obviously fond of him, and both Luma and Cassiel seemed to approve of him. The rest would eventually follow suit. After all, what wolf could possibly not give into him? Even he loved the wonderful, handsome, cunning, graceful, handsome, amazing, handsome, and muscular Jaden.
He had been about to take part in the fresh meal, but halted when Aisha approached him. And you a skilled tracker, he nodded approvingly, pressing his pelt against her side in friendship. Speaking of which, what ever happened to your right to first bite?
Or my meal all together, for that matter... he thought irritably. This work of dealing with such a dependent femme was getting old. All the little thing did was talk, and talk, and talk. If he hadn't been so handsome, he would have dug a hole and stuck his head in it just to block out her pointless jabber. There had been little return for all of his work as of yet... It's only been one day he reminded himself Nothing has ever been take over in a day
Shall we dine, Aisha? He gently licked her shoulder, heading off toward the kill, tail swaying to and fro in contentment.

Keeya raised her head as Basile joined her at her side once more, and returned his shoulder nudge. Why thank you Basile. I hope you weren't too blinded by my dazzling speed[/i]. She grinned at him, teeth stained red with blood, then stepped away from the kill, the skin of her stomach stretched tight with the food it contained. Shaking her pelt, she walked over towards an old tree, and lay down underneath it, watching the others. The combination of the meal and the exercise had taken its toll on her, and she all of a sudden felt remarkably drowsy. As she licked some of the blood off her jaws she thought about the newcomer. She hadn't yet introduced herself, though with the hunt there had not exactly been enough time for it. Ah well, she thought contently, rolling over onto her side, plenty of time for that later.

Basile glanced over to Keeya, watching her roll to her side. He smiled feeling the drowsiness of a full belly settling over him as well. He watched Luma run off for the loner, and glanced to his Father. He worried that Cassiel would collapse again, though it was illogical. Cassiel had never reacted to anything like that, that Basile knew of. Still, seeing his Father in such a state made him consider the brute in a different manner. Cassiel was still a wolf. He wasn't the Kameskai mountains themselves. He was movable, and one day he would be gone. Basile felt his heart pulled at the idea of loosing his Father. Cassiel had always been a mountain to Basile. Unbreakable, unmovable. He now was aware of his Father's mortality in a way he'd never been before. It saddened him, but made him relieved too. He couldn't explain the relief and he shook his pelt, wishing to banish the thoughts. He looked to Keeya, and trot over by her. He lay a bit away from her and stretched his black form, feeling the early winter sun warming him. He gave a sigh of contentment, allowing his lids to close. His ears stayed alert, for he was not truly asleep, merely resting. Aisha had shrugged at Jaden's comment. First bite hadn't much mattered to her. Beryl returned, my sister. She surprised us. I guess everyone forgot. She felt her skin under her fur grow hot at his lick to her shoulder. She followed him to the carcass, taking her fill while nursing an excited stomach. When she had finished, she cleaned her muzzle hating how the blood and gore seemed to so easily stain her. That done, she looked to Jaden. Her orbs were full of the bubbly hope that she seemed so well at holding and she smiled at him, waiting to catch his eye. Perhaps I could show you the lands now, Jaden? Would you like that? Just you and I? She desperately wished for alone time with Jaden. Perhaps they would talk of the future...perhaps they could talk of their future. Aisha suddenly felt the pull of winter just around the corner and it caught her off guard. She would talk to Luma later, hopefully. Winter had never... called to her before. She shook the feeling away, her banner fanning the air slowly. She glanced to her Father. Would Cass mind her and Jaden exploring together? She doubted it, but if Jaden said he'd like to go, she'd ask. The normal full belly sleep she usually wished for after such a feast was all but forgotten at the idea of running alone alongside Jaden.

The black she-wolf stood quietly, listening the chatter of the wolves around her as they communicated. It was strange being around such noise again after having been alone for a few months. The young female found herself edging after Aisha, for although the white fem was terribly annoying once her jaws got going, Beryl had known her since birth and felt oddly close to her.
She trailed after her sibling until Aisha was at Jaden's side, and then Beryl felt her eyes narrowing without intention. She didn't know what it was, but there was something about this brute that wasn't... quite right with her. Had she been older and known the seasons better, she would have recognized similar feelings to Aisha. There were no butterflies busy making her stomach growl, though, only a tickle in her throat that made her neck hairs stand up a little, giving her something like a cowlick on her nape. She didn't introduce herself, but suddenly she felt that she wouldn't leave Aisha's side, regardless of what her sibling - or Jaden - insisted.

Jaden dug into the beast ravenously, indulging in the warmth and abundance of the food. He hadn't had such a feast in... a long while, to say the least. When he was finished turned back to Aisha, licking the blood from his tan maw. I suppose sisters are awfully important business in family life. he murmured, nodding in the direction of the approaching Beryl. The new femme appeared to be pretty enough, but her eyes had a certain unapproachable edge to them. She seemed sharp, aware, almost wary of him, in a way not so very different from Keeya and Basile. Could he really look so shifty at first glance? Perhaps it was that the first she had seen of him had been during a hunt, with his eyes sharp and claws outstretched. Perhaps he was loosing his touch, though he hoped it was the first. He lowered his stance to a small degree, hoping to seem less threatening. Was it really so much to ask that everybody stop complicating his plans?
At least he had Aisha. I think I would very much like that He pressed his side against hers in a sign of friendship. His banner perked up slightly, despite his full stomach and after-meal drowsiness. At least this much was working very much in his favor. He sighed softly, just loud enough for her to hear, looking in the direction of Beryl as she came near, looking at him with those eyes Aisha could take the actions she wished, whether it sparked jealousy or expressed that he too wanted to be alone with her. It worked in his favor no matter.
Hello... Beryl, is it? he greeted her warmly, dipping his oak-colored head. He did his best to disregard the sharpness of her glare, after all, what femme would be comfortable with a new male joining her pack while she was gone? I am Jaden, and I'm new to the Kameskai, although very pleased to be here. Your dear sister Aisha was about to show me some of the lands, Your welcome to join us, if you wish his eyes smiled warmly at her, full of all the excitement of a new pack member meeting a new packmate. He then looked to Aisha, waiting for her to lead the way.
