Keeya grinned at the pup and lowered her head to look him in the eye, Nice name? You’re pretty slick there buddy. She laughed as the cub darted between her legs and looked up to see the cause of this terror being Basile. The large black male had a pained look on his face, though it was obvious that he was trying to be pleasant for his brother. So he’d noticed Jaden then, or the lack of Jaden rather. The grey female sighed and looked over toward Aisha, who was looking more and more distressed with each passing moment. At least motherhood will distract her from him, Keeya said without words to Basile. She put on a more pleasant face and caught his gaze, noting his touch as he sat beside her. New friend huh? Your brother, I’m afraid, has been chatting me up, she laughed, as the cub boldly made his way out from underneath her. Her smile gradually faded to slight panic as the ball of fur began firing off a barrage of questions, and the final one left her speechless. Finally she said tightly, We’re good friends, shorttooth, good friends, though at the same time she pressed her side against Basile’s.

The dark grey brute padded in content with his tongue lolling. His saffron eyes focused lightly on the path and heavily on the distant target while his nose told him all he needed to know about things around him.
Pups. The future of the pack. Even though he was newly accepted, Kaji felt at home and felt as though he belonged here. He was excited to meet the pups though his steps were calculated and his eyes did not reveal his immense happiness.
As he approached the rendevous site he lowered his head and let his tail wave slowly behind him, making sure it was okay that he move closer.

Time had passed more quickly than she thought it had, for it seemed like only yesterday that she had been helping to dig alongside Luma in an effort to ready a den for the oncoming life that swelled within the alpha’s mate’s abdomen. A season had changed since that time, the days had grown invitingly warm, some warmer than others causing a slight distress on the body of the quiet wolf Glycerine for she longed for the cold days of winter once more and missed the frigid gales that blew tendrils of snowflakes into gusts that swirled downward from the heavens. Alas she would labor this season as she must, only so that autumns cooling caress could be upon her once more.
She had kept quietly to herself after returning from the last hunt’s slaughtered carcass, and had mingled silently through the forest surrounding where the wolves had been gathering. The coming of the pups had been a joyous occasion and though she wished to fawn over the beautiful puppies she remained afar for a time, allowing the family their time as well as the more established members of the pack. She had been lounging under the shade of an ancient looking pine tree that leaned slightly off to the side when she noticed another of the newer members edging nearer and decided to seek out his company. Slowly she padded over to his side, her posture mimicking his own, eyes flashing a friendly gleam that spoke of good will. “Hello pack brother. Is it your wish too, to meet with the new additions to the clan? They are certainly beautiful are they not?”

Cassiel grinned at Basil's comments. Yes, there did seem to be at least one in each of his three litters that resembled him fiercely. He was perfectly fine with that, though; it meant his specter would haunt these lands in the physical form, too. He then watched as his dark hued son turned and padded away, excusing himself. His ears twitched upon hearing Jerrico's words, and the alpha turned his head to shield his humor. Awkward, but even the cub sees it.
He gave his attention back to Luma and Rose as his mate explained exactly what she was… which wasn't, technically, "grandmother". The white crown nodded in approval once of the older's fem response. Well worded, Luma.
Yet then Aisha was asking him of Jaden through body language, and the old brute released a sigh. I have not seen him. I'm sorry, my child. He knew it would hurt her, his little bubbly angel. But she had chosen a bad brute - assuming he really was gone - and there was nothing that Cass could do to fix a broken heart. Thaddeus grinned at Luma and brushed his muzzle against her shoulder; his tassel wavered out behind him. Oh, but I don't know about that. I doubt I ever will. He glanced at his stomach, a rueful look on his face. All that I can carry back there is food and… well. You know what I mean. His eyes sparkled mischievously. So there's really no need for me to hole up somewhere.
His eyes traveled about the immediate area and then scanned further out after Luma questioned him. Had he enjoyed it here? Of course. What wasn't there to enjoy? He blinked, letting his face become more serious, and said, I believe, really, that any season here would be worth waiting a lifetime for. Family is, after all. And this is family before land. At least, it was in his mind.
G A B R I E L Gabriel's bright puppy blue eyes peered at the female cub for a few moments after she spoke, but again his voice locked up and he was speechless. How could he so easily talk to his mom and brother, but not these other wolves? It confused him, and he lowered his backend to the earth with a thud. Cassiel absently gave him a nudge forward, encouraging him, and Gabe stood again and took a few steps toward Briar Rose. G-gabe, he said after a moment of silence, and then his eyes dropped to the ground in shame. I'm sorry.

Basile's green orbs widened at his Brother's sudden explosion of questions. He asked if Keeya and he had pups, if they were mates and first he felt a blush heat his skin. Then, the awkward nature of things made him grin, and then he chuckled loudly. He felt Keeya press into his side. He considered his response, before grinning slyly. His orbs adopted an expression of mock hurt and he winked to his younger brother. Oh, Keeya, My love, why must you lie to my kin? Are you ashamed of me? Please tell me, I can not bear hearing you deny me. You, my one and only mate before the moon. The most beautiful female to ever grace the Kameskai? He lowered before her into a play bow. Spring had a hold of him it seemed, and he was in a playful mood. His grin was huge and his green orbs sparkled with humor. Certainly the fem wouldn't know he meant the last part in all honesty. JerricoJerrico's brow creased when the fem said they were only friends. He glanced around at the others, seeing if they had heard. He could nearly smell their attraction to each other. Surely they must be joking. Then his brother, Basile, looked to him. It appeared he had something in his orb, then he fell before the fem caterwauling at her to not deny him. Jerrico's ears twitched back and he slowly considered backing away. He caught sight of another dark wolf and cocked his head. Was he related to this brute as well? He wanted to find out. Certainly it was better then the embarrassing couple before him. He harbored no ill feelings for them. All the same, though, their confusing scent of attraction mixed with her denial and his Sib's obvious nature of distress...it was a little too much for him. He quickly trot to the other dark wolf who was speaking to Momma. His ears perked and he barked at him. Momma had called him Thad, he thought. Hey! Thad? Are you my brother too? You kind of look like Basile. Why are my brother and Keeya acting so odd? Aren't they mated?Artist: entaie.deviantart.com/ Luma laughed at Thad's words. She realized her and the dark wolf hadn't much talked before. She rather liked him though. He projected a humor she liked. Especially after being deep inside the ground so long. I should hope you never do actually know what I mean, Thad. I'd be quite worried for you. I'd help you through it, though. She smiled, her yellow orbs sparkling and happy. She glanced around to see Basile making a fuss toward Keeya. She shook her head. Would the brute or the fem realize their feelings first, she wondered. More interestingly, who would realize the other's feelings first. She grinned, a feeling of timelessness descending on her shoulders. Pups and grand pups scrambled under paw, while she conversed with the new and old clan members alike. Further still, Basile and Keeya were playing and joking--courting. It was life it all it's splendor. Young, grown and old all gathered. A complete cycle. She sighed, then noticed Jerrico had approached Thad. She watched and restrained her laughter when he mentioned Keeya and Basile's antics. Aisha hung her head, momentarily blind to all around her. She let a tear drip down her puzzled to plat against the ground. She then inhaled and raised her head, a determined look shining inside her brown orbs. Thank you, Father. I will be strong for my little ones. They need me far more then I need my...Jaden. I shall remain hopeful of his return. She shook herself vigorously, as if shaking off all her sadness. How are things for you and Luma, Father? I see my brothers are strong. have I missed much when i holed myself away?BriarBriar's puppy blue orbs remained trained on the little brute who had spoken to her. She waited patiently for him to speak. He seemed to have given up and she was prepared to bug him until he replied. Grandfather nudged him and finally words came from his maw, though. Her little auds caught his words and she smiled. Gabe. That's a nice name. It's short like mine. Briar. Mom calls me Rose but...don't listen to her. She beamed mischievously and her banner wagged. Why are you sorry? You shouldn't be. It's okay to be shy, you know. As long as you have friends. She trot over to him and touched his shoulder with her nose. You can be my first friend if you like. Mom said I'll have lots one day. I don't know though. Seems like it'd be hard to have a lot of friends. Her tiny brow furrowed for a moment before it cleared to another smile. Would you be my first friend, Gabe? Pleease? I like you. Even if you are shy.

Keeya barked with laughter as the little cub slunk away, apparently embarrassed by his older brother’s sudden outburst. She watched him trot off to seek answers from Thad and turned back to face the black male, who was positioned awkwardly in front of her in a playful bow. Stifling another laugh, she bowed her head towards him and glared into his bright green eyes. Of course I’m ashamed of you, silly. You’ve just scarred your new brother for life with your tomfoolery, she paused briefly, considering the two options now available, and decided on impulse to go where her heart was telling her, raising her head to tug at his ear, Basile, by the light of the sun I swear that I would never defy you. I submit to you, O great raven, my dear, and cherish you with all my heart. She grinned soppily at him and rolled over on to her back, gazing up at him with laughing eyes. By now the eyes of many of the pack were upon the two of them, though Keeya couldn’t care less. She realised how this situation would work. If Basile was simply joking around, then it would be easy for them to carry on as normal and view the whole thing as a joke. If he was serious, well, then. She was serious too.

Basile banner slunk down and he rose from his play bow at Keeya's first words. He hung his head, glancing at her from the corner of his green orbs. Then she whipped around, responding in a completely different manner. She tugged at his ear, and proceeded to submit to him, grinning in a way that made Basile unsure if she were merely kidding or not. He felt his heart thud faster inside his large dark breast. He glanced around quickly, knowing that others would be watching. He felt a second of embarrassment, usually he was rather serious. He'd always had a good sense of humor, and he'd let that show occasionally. Now he'd played like a pup and he wondered if the others would think less of him for it. These thoughts occurred in a second before his jade orbs found the silver fem again. He considered how to respond, unsure what to say. Was the fem merely playing back? Or was she serious? He swallowed thickly. He could ruin their friendship or any future relationship if he respond wrong. It came to him that the pack would probably excuse his antics. They loved him, or tolerated him at the least. They'd view him as the typical young brute in love. Love? Is that truly what I feel? I've never felt such an emotion before. Aside from the warm stirrings she causes in me. Could this be what Father felt for Mother? What Father feels for Luma? Time had drawn on, the situation hovered on awkward and he needed to respond. He smiled, a warm smile quite different from his teasing grin of before. Don't make promises you can't keep, my dear. You'll find you could twist some hearts in the process. He stared into her light blue orbs, allowing her to glimpse that he was serious. Then his banner waved through the air and the previous grin replaced the more serious. Perhaps... His silent language was nervous, stilted. We should.... take some time from the others. Together. I would quite like to know if you've just twisted my heart, or made it a great amount more full. His green orbs blinked, closing longer then necessary. He knew, if he had misread her actions, and upset her with his serious words then more then likely she wouldn't be watching him now. She probably would have turned her orbs from the buffoon before her in embarrassment. He swallowed and opened his twin pools. He turned to look and her reaction. The whole clan could be watching with distaste for all he knew. He thought not though. The wolves around him were his family, blood or no blood.

Thud thud thud. O, moon! Keeya felt as though she would keel over. Her legs quivered as she flipped to her feet, and she stood unsteadily, her brain gawking at the sudden change of atmosphere. Basile had suddenly reverted back to his serious self, yet there was a trace of the previous energy hidden behind his grim exterior. She wished that she could have a glimpse of what was going on in his head, wondered if he was feeling the same as her right now. Though he was trying to mask his emotions, Keeya couldn’t help but think that there was something else to it. She caught him looking at the others and her eyes widened. He’s afraid? Embarrassed? It was hard to imagine the great dark male being ashamed or awkward of anything. She watched with bated breath as his eyes searched hers and a decade passed before he spoke gently. He spoke seriously at first, then resumed some of the previous playfulness, still layered with enough gravity to let her know that he meant what he said. It wasn’t a game. Her heart caught in her throat as she looked at him closely. The next words she spoke would change both of their lives forever. Keeya wondered why Basile made several mention of twisting a heart. She looked over towards Aisha, who at the moment was bravely trying to ignore a tear rolling down her cheek, and the grey female’s eyes widened with realisation. He’s scared of what happened to Aisha. It was a theory that perhaps explained his sudden seriousness. O, no, I would never do anything to hurt you, she could see the eyes of the others from the corner of her own eyes and understood that it would be best to get away from the pack for a while, Yes, of course I’ll come with you. He knew the Kameskai lands far better than she, and so she waited for him to decide the direction they would go. While she did not show all her true feelings at once, it was far harder for the energetic female to mask her emotions as effectively as Basile did, and so her tail wagged gently between her legs, and her eyes shone with affection for this gravely handsome brute. Keeya laughed inwardly at the situation, and how a puppy had caused the two to finally take stock of things. She remembered fervently every single time Basile had made eye contact with her, every time he had brushed against her or looked at her in that way that made her stomach flutter, and wondered why she hadn’t ever thought that it could be something more than friendship. Thad, for example. She didn’t feel the same way about him as she did Basile and the two of them were close friends to her. It was interesting, this relationship business, absolutely fascinating.

The brute laughed at Luma's comment and swept his tassel about behind him. If I ever find myself in such a predicament, rest assumed, dear Luma, that you shall be the first to know… other than, of course, the mate - who'd surely have to be as strange as myself for such a thing to occur. He laughed again, a bubbling sound from deep within his narrow chest. Then he heard a cub's voice, and the paused and glanced around.
Thaddeus brought his strange, khaki colored eyes down up the cub that had approached him with something akin to curiosity sparkling in their depths. One of Luma's children, the more outspoken. A smile crept across his face and issued a soft rumble before he responded verbally. Such intuition, this one.
No, little Jerrico, (he'd heard the cub's name from the others) I am not your brother by blood. I am, however, your pack-brother - which can sometimes be as good as being a blood-brother. He doubted the cub would understand completely. Thad himself hadn't for many, many seasons of his life. His muzzle dropped down as he crouched toward the earth. The scar that jagged across it, stark pinkish gray, was a startling contrast to the pitch ebony upon him.
He chose to ignore the comment regarding his appearance and Basile's. That was just family genetics, all of the wolves who were somehow interrelated years by gone that had been black. Too much, surely, for Jerrico's young mind. Instead his eyes twinkled as he looked at his two very dear friends, their antics drawing the clan's attention. They are not mated, no. Although I think that will change in the coming months. But they are acting strangely because I think they've been nipped by the love-bug, a dastardly little fellow that goes around and bites you on the haunch when you least expect it.
Just as he said this, Thaddeus's eyes rose from the cub's facade and caught upon the single tear that glistened once in the afternoon sunlight before falling from Aisha's face to the ground. But wolves don't cry, do they? His jowls hung slack for a moment as he considered this, trying to remember if he'd ever seen a canine cry… and then the image of his mother came to mind, and the black wolf visibly flinched. I suppose they do.
He shook his head and stood back up, confused. Why such emotion from a single memory? Another came to mind then, of a silver beta upset over something that had happened many years before. To me? He thought so, for some reason. Then his eyes happened to catch the edge of his scar, peripherally, and he blinked.
His voice was a bit thin when he spoke again. I'm sorry, Luma, little Jerrico. You'll have to excuse me for a moment… I think I've just remembered something that needs attending to. He smiled at the cub and touched him on the nose. I'll see you later… watch out for that little bug. It hurts! The lanky wolf's frame then turned and padded away, leaving his scent behind to wreath through the clearing.

Basile felt his banner twitch, a small wave. He smiled nervously, swallowed thickly once more. Green orbs turned to his Father's brown. He hoped he hadn't acted too greatly a fool. He stared at Cassiel for a long moment, searching the warm brown orbs for any scraps of information he could gather. I'm sorry, my friends. He noticed Thad excuse himself from Luma and slip away rather quickly. His brow wrinkled, and he paused his speaking a moment. Were he not already in his own dilemma at present, he would have followed his friend to see what had called him away so quickly. As it was, though--he glanced back to Keeya's eager orbs--he had matters to attend to. He turned back to the others, knowing they'd been watching. Father, Luma...if you will excuse Keeya and I... He trailed off, unsure what to say. Embarrassed again. We have things we must discuss. I apologize. He dipped his large dark skull in a small bow. He felt guilty, for running off when he should be meeting and playing with his Niece and new brothers. At the moment though, Gabe and Briar--the niece he'd yet to formally meet--were conversing. Jerrico had left Keeya and him, and Lucien hadn't bothered to speak. He wasn't truly in any conversation, save Keeya's, and for theirs to continue he felt they needed privacy. I am sorry, Father. We can wait, if you wish. Basile orbs were bright, hopeful. He was eager to talk with Keeya. It wasn't mating season, not by a long shot. Basile understood this. If anything they would merely get their feelings in the open. See what was what and what wasn't. Then...when mating season did come around and if they both still felt the same...their tryst through the snows would be more meaningful. If Cassiel did wish them to stay, Basile would do as told. Keeya and he would wait until Cass dismissed them. They both may be squirming in their seats by that time...but they'd do it.

G A B R I E L The little white cub grinned at Briar, liking her spunkiness. He doubted he'd have the courage to tell anyone to not listen to his mother. But then, perhaps she just didn't have a mother like Luma, whose eyes seemed to be everywhere at once and who knew instantly when he was doing wrong - or so it seemed to the young one. I'd like that, being friends. He blinked at her, and his fuzzy white auds flickered upon his ivory head. And have lots of friends seems much too much like a hassle, to me. He was content, however, being alone. Cassiel sat in silence as the wolves he loved mingled around him, each caught up in their own lives, but each inextricably bound to the rest with thin spider-webs of emotions. It was fascinating, watching them all. He especially found it humorous that Basile and Keeya were having so awkward a time getting past the friendship stage in their relationship. He remembered well when he'd upped the so-called bets with his dear Epitaph.
The brute caught himself just in time, his eyes closing and shielding his thoughts from those around him. Not even his son, Basile, or his mate, Luma, might have seen what transgressed there. Not my dear anymore. She's gone, of her own will… but because of me. When his orbs opened again they were sad, but they others would think that it was for his daughter's sake - and her disappeared mate, Jaden.
When he heard his ebony son ask of him to leave, the brute dipped his head, allowing them to leave. He'd already seen Thad slip away. It wouldn't harm anyone for them to leave to… collect themselves. In the father's eyes, however, there was a kindly and humorous message for his son - and only his son. Good luck, and may the Maker bless what you're about to stumble into.

A smile flickered through his wondering eyes as he watched the young wolves play and mingle. As his packmate moved toward him his tail waved in greeting. What better to brighten the day then watch new life, better yet new pack members, learn who they are and where they are. His ears twitched between the activity in front of him and Glycerine at his side. How many generations of Kameskai have you had the pleasure to witness? Genuine curiousity tinged his thoughts. He still did not know his packmates that well and any information he could get helped.
