Thaddeus, while being by nature something of loner, was feeling oddly... alone.
It occurred to him that it had been several weeks since he had seen another canine face, let alone spoken to it. He remembered his sibling coming in the early autumn days, asking for him to return to the clan. But he had shunned her, distastefully considering how it was run by his mother. Something in him, however, was turning itself over, and the black wolf, now three or four turns of the seasons, was beginning to understand why the others had chosen clan life over pack life.
It was intriguing. He sat silently in the shadow of a tree, a tree which like him stood alone out in the meadows of the Atyka. He had chosen this spot several times recently as a night-time place of sleep, but now as the winter came he was finding it's severe solitude a prick in his coat. He glanced down, scuffling his forepaw against the ground, considering his options. He could always go the Ravilin, he supposed; especially if that brute, Faris, was no longer around. He would be welcomed with open and friendly faces by his sister, and perhaps too by his mother... his lip curled. No, he wasn't going back to his mother. Not Thaddeus, son of Nuri, who's line was too strong to be coddled by a mother. Besides, if that old male Carrick was still around and grouchy and bitter... well, Thad had no interest in seeing him again, either.
His other option, as far as clans were concerned, was the Kameskai. Ah, here a point of interest. The young male had never entered the land of the mountain wolves, knowing from their border scents they were strong and wouldn't tolerate a curious trespasser.
Thad blinked, thinking.
What if he asked to join them? His tongue lolled from his muzzle as he twisted his head sideways, gazing off into the west, where the white mountain tips touched the evening sky. Perhaps that was a way to learn more about the island. He could join them, understand them, know their secrets... and then leave. What could they do to keep him to stay, especially if they didn't suspect anything? Absolutely nothing. Besides, Thad was fast. He could outrun many a wolf, both in speed and endurance.
The brute sighed, content with his idea. He had nothing to lose. No mate, no cubs, nothing holding back the bachelor from doing whatever he pleased.
And at the moment, he pleased to test his ability to smooth talk an alpha figure. His knowledge of the land, by itself, plus his young and healthy body, should be enough to get him accepted. Easily.
Thaddeus laughed aloud, joy and a strange emotion... he couldn't place it - filling his chest. The sun set, and the wolf slept. In the morning he rose silently and shook the debris from his coat before heading west, toward his new clan.
