He had watched her with a steady gaze and yet inwardly he too was unsteady. His words had been said true, as were the intentions behind them. Had he come here seeking a mate? Absolutely not… he had come to find a home, and a pack in which to bond with. Was it his intention to woo this female into his whims? Even further from the truth. He had found a kindred soul that was aching, perhaps the same way he ached inside, and though neither could know the future or where their paths would take them, the brief moments spent together had been surreal and unworldly. He had offered this lone alpha a piece of himself and she too had opened herself up to him. He had taken her thoughts and words greedily and only hoped for me, and in turn would share all that she wished to know of him.
Her words were heartfelt, and that heart empt of pain and yet so much more. But there was not time to contemplate them, for in a rustle of fury a large formidable wolf had appeared through the timbers. His massive physique and threatening stance spoke leagues in his state of mind. And though in pure instinctual reaction he had rose and braced himself in a rigid pose, lips threatening to curl back and reveal those brilliant incisors, he stilled. This wolf and the female who came soon after were a part of this pack, their scents spoke strongly of this. And then he remembered himself, quickly relaxing his body, tail lowered in submission though his intent cerulean orbs remained wary. The growl that had begun to rumble up in his throat was swallowed. He had not forgotten the sacred ways of their world, and the reality was that in their home, he was merely the last knot upon the rope, and these were his superiors. He could not chastise their antics though, for his and Larka's meeting had been highly unorthodox. “ I apologize if I gave you cause to worry. I mean neither your leader nor the pups harm I assure you. I have come in seek of a home and that is what has been offered to me.”
The situation was tense, perhaps more tense then he could even imagine, unknowing of their histories. His gaze swept from wolf to wolf, unsure of what would transpire at the harsh tones of Larka. He was taken aback by the female who had entered after the larger male, but was sure not to criticize any. There was clear confusion welling up inside of him at the hateful looks directed towards him but said nothing further.

Carrick seemed to swell as Larka uttered her hateful words, and a snarl ripped lose from his over broad muzzle, fangs baring. I dare chastise you, Larka, because we waited for your permission to leave this clearing. It is a far cry for you to accuse me of abandonment when you told us to go because this clearing was safe from loners and threats. And she had invited the potential threat right into the heart of a tender encampment! He couldn't even bring himself to address her distasteful comment toward Zena, and Carrick's brown eyes revealed the fury that rumbled inside him the insult of his closest friend as she dashed into the forest.
You are not fit to rule as you are, Larka, you have never been. As a whelp trying to reign here I could forgive your mistakes better than than now, for you are an adult in her prime and should have more sense than you've ever displayed. I am so very disappointed.
The large wolf glanced at the newcomer, Atka. He had seen the instinctual reaction - to fight - come out of the brute. He growled, but it wasn't heartfelt. The white male was a stranger to him, and so Carrick had acted as any half decent pack wolf would around his injured leader and pack's young cubs. It is not you that needs forgiving, stranger. Beware where you're heart choses to lie, for this one here is like the black spider that eats it's mate. You won't last long.
He was temped to tell her to take well care of her new plaything, Atka, but that would have been childish and would be insulting a brute that, for all he knew, could be a very noble creature. Instead he let his disgusted eyes fall on Larka, betraying once more all of his dislike for the white female. Do not insult those better than yourself, Larka. Chance has a way of correcting some mistakes. Was that an ominous glint in his deep eyes?
He turned, confident in Atka's ability to keep her "safe" - although at the moment, he found he rather hoped Atka was the mistrustful and cunning creature that he assumed most loners were. He could take Larka's life, and Carrick would find himself at ease in the forest with only Zena, and perhaps Cloud and Surulian, by his side. He broke into a run, leaving behind the scene, and followed Zena's scent trail.

Larka remained silent throughout his badgering, her frame visibly relaxed when he ran off. Turning to Atka, she spoke quietly, willing him to understand what had happened.
I was thrust the mantle of Alpha-hood at a young age, with no one to teach me. Carrick had been my first pack mate. He acted as a sort of mentor that I looked up to. I, in my youth, became smitten with him and he did not handle rejecting my feelings very...tactfully, lets just say. It has been years since then, and this...this festering dislike has grown within him despite my attempts to heal the rift that was created on that fateful day. To gain more members I sought out Nuri who I had met only once but was a gentle soul, forever a loner. He gave me the gift of pups, so that I might raise them to be strong Ravilin wolves, but he himself never set foot within the terrain. I was young, and Carrick was jealous and spiteful that I had conceived pups with a loner, but there was no other way, as he had already rejected me. Needless to say it was difficult to raise them virtually on my own, so only two survived. Thaddeus followed the path of his father Nuri, and Kira remains loyal to the forest.
She paused, calming her shaken nerves by grooming Polaris and Ember gently before continuing.
Many members came and went. I found Zena when she was but a yearling. I did not mean to hurt her, my anger was directed at Carrick. I know also that she did not mean the things that she said. I believe the two of us will forgive each other.
About a year and a half ago a silver brute by the name of Faris joined the ranks, and he and Carrick became fast friends. That is-until Faris became smitten with me. I thought that things had finally turned around-I had a loving mate who was Alpha alongside me, my pups would have a father. Carrick became even more bitter, accusing me in no uncertain terms that I had stolen his friend from him. It was in fact, Faris who approached me. A few months after the pups were born- a small litter of three- my mate and two of the pups vanished without a trace.
You might be wondering how this could happen. Well, we are a fairly disjointed pack because I do not know how to rule when my kindness gets taken advantage of. We wander alone for many days, and when I try to rally us together again only a few will answer my call. I know not what to do to make my pack thrive, i only hope that with new blood arises a new future.
This fight between Carrick and I has been simmering under the surface for ages. You, my friend, just happened to be the catalyst.
Her auds drooped, waiting for him to run off into the forest as well.
Am I truly cursed? Is there any hope of a happier existance?

Exhausted though she was, Ember stirred at the turmoil among the adults. She was frightened at the conflict she found and remained quiet and still as to not draw attention to herself or irritate the already tense adults. Her ice blue eyes darted from one to the other as she watched the exchange, her body pressed as close to the ground and Larka as possible in an effort to look small.
As the alpha explained her story to the newcomer, Ember also listened. Sorrow and worry filled the young pup as she learned of the troubled history of her new pack. When Larka paused to groom her, Ember squeezed her eyes shut and held her breath. She'd only just found other wolves to be with. Was this new haven also doomed to be torn asunder and leave her once again alone?

Polaris was also listening silently, how could she not with all the growling? She was sad to learn of her 'mother's history, but there was one thing that polaris never doubted while she lay there with her eyes closed.
Larka would always be there to protect her.

The wind blew in earnest, the gale a spiteful cold front that had moved in silently as a cobra, creeping across the hills and through the threes, staking a claim to this domain with a rigid fist. The trees whined with it’s vigor, straining against the pressure now forced upon their trunks, the canopy having no choice but to wane in the direction of the wind’s current. It was a bitter day filled with bitter words and feelings. And now as the sun began to fall behind the trees in the west, the prospect of something enlightening grew ever so dim. Atka pondered on the whirlwind of emotions and feelings that swirled within like a cyclone, each word uttered, each heartfelt emotion leapt, touching upon his heart and mind.
Gingerly he extended his maw to lightly caress the pallid wolf’s shoulder. For a time, he knew not what to say. Knowing that this episode had been partly because of him, and partly because of a ravine dug so deep between this lone alpha and her pack that the damage could be irreversible. That was not for Atka to decide upon though, unfortunately that weight remained upon Larka’s shoulders alone, for he could not mend those wounds.
“ Larka… you have not had an easy time of it here in these forests, and I dare say that at least some of your pack does not respect you. You kind heart leaves way for their unharnessed actions, and that simply cannot do. Not in a pack... not where the members of this family need to work as one. They may have a difference of opinion, but it is their duty to follow and support. This is not a democracy after all. I do not know how to tell you to rally them in your charge, but charge must be taken to bring the wavering threads into one tapestry for the survival of all. Certainly now before the winter month’s set in. Please know... I say not these words to dictate or lecture, I speak from experience, for I have seen far too many packs fell apart at the seams. I wish for your pack to flourish and for you to once again find happiness. For your sake, for their sake, and for the pups sake.”

Larka released a sigh as he spoke, his gentle voice calming her frazzled nerves.
In a days time, I will call them again. We are not used to being in a group for very long. After this episode, I believe everyone needs time to clear their heads...rethink what was said and done-although I know Carrick does not resent what he said, I know in my heart that the void between us is too great to bridge, for his stubborness refuses to allow us to flourish. It is from him that the bitterness stems within me.
Atka, I do hope that I have not persuaded you to leave. This spat has been lurking beneath the surface for some time, do not blame yourself for its occurance. I was rash and over defensive. How is it that you can be so calm and self assured? How I long to see things the way you do, perhaps then my pack would respect me...
Her golden orbs threatened to dim, but she made a point to keep them bright and alive, thinking of the handsome wolf who sat beside her, encouraging and gentle when she felt as if her world had crashed down around her auds.
Had her luck finally changed?

Atka A T K A [/color]
It was hard for Atka to envision a pack that could thrive in such circumstances. Members who spoke out harshly towards their alpha… The lack of community and brotherhood that seemed to leak through the seams of their bonds. It did not seem like a family here, nor a well polished engine. He did not seek to criticize them, that was certainly not his place, but he could not get his mind around their mentality. Perhaps things were handled differently than on his island home though. These did not seem like ill natured wolves, nor unintelligent. The elements that could found a strong pack were here and yet they were all but sinews floating in the wind waiting for something to tie them together. Larka had a good heart; he could tell that my speaking with her… he could feel that in that way that empathy flowed through him. But he was unsure how to tell her to lead, and how to encourage her wolves, her pack… to respect her.
“Do not fear, my will is not to abandon you or this land. Your circumstances are trying though... and I wish I could find a way to help you. I think it is good that you give them time to cool off, but do not give them too much time. The frayed ends of the Ravilin rope are so loose already, I fear the more distance that occurs, the worse the situation might become. “
Concentration overcame him then, lending his body to the winds will as he allowed it to take him into a slight pace though he had not willed it. He busied himself about Larka and the pups, his mind reeling on their situation. He stopped momentarily to nose at the pups around her, gently licking the tops of their muzzles in a tender way before coming back again to recline next to the pallid alpha. His eyes were troubled and wary from thought, and still no answers came to him.

Larka smiled gently as an intriguing emotion welled up within her while she watched Atka groom the young life that was nestled around her, as if she were envisioing a utopia-like scene-fall leaves swirling about, happy healthy pups playing-while an ever diligent and kind pair of white wolves stood guard, their auras eminating happiness and love.
Shaking herself from her pleasant reverie, Larka listened to his words, which she knew were true.
I know, dear Atka. I need to make ammends, with Zena, at the very least. I need to see how my son is fairing with Cloud and Surulian...
Can I help it if I do not want to break the peace of this sheltered glen? Is it wrong of me to want to lay by your side, warmed and calmed by your very presence?
These thoughts were fairly evident in her golden orbs as she gazed at him, and them almost shyly she looked away, shifting her weight on her linbs to try and keep their strength up.
